DVD Upconvert: Blu-Ray SkyRockets to $400, HD-DVD At Lowest Ever

The top rated Blu-Ray Players this week all broke the $400 mark: Samsung BD-P1400, Sony BDP-S300, Sharp BD-HP20U, Panasonic DMP-BD30K, and the LG BH200.

These Blu-Ray models are for people who demand the absolute highest quality viewing experience possible. Price is no object; quality is. Each player does a decent job of DVD upconverting and, if you’re looking to invest in a quality Blu-Ray player, you can’t go wrong with any of these models, especially the LG BH200.

The Sony Playstation 3 (if you can find it in stock!) also hovers around the $400 mark, depending on the size of the drive. The PS3 supports firmware upgrades, internet content downloads, and (of course) it’s a gaming console.

The next generation of Blu-Ray players will feature “Enhanced BD Live”. Among the features of Enhanced BD Live is web content. And you can bet that once the next generation of Blu-Ray players hits the market, the price of the existing models above will drop rapidly (with the exception of the PS3).

HD-DVD Price Continues Downward Spiral

Meanwhile, in the HD-DVD world, both the Toshiba A3 and the Toshiba HD-A30 have fallen to all time lows. If you just want quality DVD upconverting for your existing DVD collection, this is the most economical route to go.

HD-DVD Bundles are still selling on Ebay for both the Toshiba A3 and the Toshiba HD-A30.

Oppo Still The Best for DVD Upconverting Purists

Of course, Oppo remains steady with its line of DVD upconverting players: the Oppo DV-980H, the Oppo DV-981HD, and the not yet widely available DV-983H. When you want the highest quality dedicated DVD upconversion, Oppo is the way to go.

Until next time, enjoy a higher quality viewing experience.
