December 2008 DVD Upconversion

Looking to get more out of your DVD collection this holiday season? Unfortunately, the advice this year is the same as last year: avoid Blu-Ray.  Prices haven’t dropped much on Blu-Ray players, and the future of the format is still uncertain. In the mean time, DVD sales continue to far outpace Blu-Ray sales.

Sure, Blu-Ray vs. DVD is standard definition (480i) vs. High Definition (1080p), but the difference is not as striking as the salesmen claim it is and the timing is not right to go out,  buy a Blu-Ray player, then replace your DVD collection with its Blu-Ray counterpart.
If you’re going to take the plunge into Blu-Ray, go for something like the LG Network Blu-ray Disc Player. The LG player lets you instantly watch thousands of movies and television programs from Netflix. Of course, that requires that the LG is connected to the internet and you have a Netflix membership.

Also, make sure the Blu-Ray player supports “BD-Live”, which is also referred to as Blu-ray 2.0.

Whether you’re considering Blu-Ray, or DVD Upconversion, many people want to expand their home entertainment system. After all, the holidays are coming.  But what components should you add?

Well, depending on what you currently have, here’s a list of top recommended home entertainment hardware, listed in order of priority. That is, before you get the stuff at the bottom of the list, make sure you have the stuff at the top of the list:

HDTV (Plasma, LCD, DLP Projector – just make sure it’s 1080p!)
DVD Upconverting Player (make sure it has an HDMI connection!)
Home Theater System (5.1 Dolby or better)
Sony Playstation 3 (plays Blu-Ray, great DVD upconversion, and it plays games!)
Blu-Ray Player (see note below)

The links above go the Amazon store on shop-hdtvs.com.  Amazon is a reputable companies you can trust.

Model recommendations:
HDTV:
Toshiba’s REGZA XV545 (quality built-in upconversion for both television programs and DVDs) This TV will up-convert anything you plug into it!

Toshiba XD-E500 up-converter DVD — Toshiba has also added a top-of-the-line up-converter DVD player for folks who may already have HD TV channels but also have a large DVD collection.

Until next time, enjoy a higher quality viewing experience.
