DVD Upconvert: Avoid Becoming An Early Adopter
If you’re following the news regarding high definition formats, you already know there is an ongoing battle between Blu-Ray and HD-DVD. HD-DVD has been receiving blow after blow and, at this point, it appears Blu-Ray will become the new standard for high definition.
But don’t run out and buy a Blu-Ray player just yet. Why? Here are two compelling reasons:
1) Blu-Ray has not yet been standardized; today’s players may very well become tomorrow’s obsolete predecessor, particularly those players that have no way of updating firmware.
2)The price of Blu-Ray players and Blu-Ray movies is far too high right now; prices will fall dramatically as Blu-Ray becomes more and more popular.
The only reasonable exception I’d make is if you wanted to purchase a Sony Playstation 3, which has an integrated Blu-Ray player, a fully upgradable firmware, and provides plenty of additional entertainment value.
Otherwise, if you are considering a home entertainment system upgrade and you have a great DVD collection, stick with a quality DVD Upconverting player, such as the Oppo DV-981HD or DV-980HD. Secondary, of course, to the inevitable HDTV upgrade!
